Best of Both Worlds

While I successfully sounded like a Miley Cyrus (or is it Hannah Montana) song, I found a poem while surfing the web today that really captures the two worlds I love.

Man and Nature in New York and Kansas
by Martha Baird

Have you ever seen the fields of wheat, nothing but
wheat, from here to the horizon?
Ah, then, you have missed something.
I remember the wheat in Lane County, Kansas,--
Named for James H. Lane, "Jim Lane, of Kansas,"
a hero at the time of "bleeding Kansas", a brave
man who worked hard and took chances so that
no human being should be owned by any other
       human being in Kansas.
So Lane County, Kansas, is named for him,
And I remember the wheat fields there.
Let me tell you how it was.
The earth is even, west of Dighton,
And the road is straight.
On both sides, there is the wheat,
As far as you can see; And it waves
In the wind.
The heads of the wheat are heavy
And the stems are slim.
The heads have a deeper color than the stems,
Deeper green in spring, Deeper amber later.
And so there is waving green,
Or waving amber,
Mile on mile.
The sky is blue and wide and bright,
And the wheat waves under it.
I remember the wheat, and I hear the wheat saying:
"See what nature and man can do!
See what nature and man can do!
Be happy,
We are the wheat."
Have you ever seen the high buildings of Manhattan ,
near sundown, on a cold, gray day?
Ah, then, you have missed something.
Let me tell you how it is.
Walk down Lexington Avenue Towards 57th Street,
And look to the west.
Look up and see
The Great tall buildings,
The cold stone buildings,
High against the sky.
Look! The great stone buildings are pink!
The setting sun is making them rosy!
They are solid and rosy,
And give forth light.
The gray sky is confused and scurrying;
It is rosy too, in spite of itself.
The proud gorgeous buildings
Love the light
They love the sun for making them rosy,
Showing what they can be.
Busy people go about their business,
Eyes on the ground,
While the proud gorgeous buildings say with the
       wheat fields:
"See what nature and man can do!
See what nature and man can do!
Be happy,
We are the rosy buildings and the wheat."

Five doller brews and that store Trader Joe's

Can you believe it?  My first week as a Martha Stewart Intern is over?  Yes, yes it is.  And I am shocked to see that it went by so fast, but I feel like I've been there forever!  The rest of the week went really well!  I'm getting to know my co-workers better and I've discovered a lot of new things about New York that make me love it even more!

Highlights of the week:

Getting drinks after work at McSorely's Ale House with AE:  This pub was recommended to us by one of AE's co-workers at MSW and let's just say SUCCESS.  The pub was offer only two types of Ale, light and dark, served in two half-pint mugs for only $5.  They brew the ale locally so it was fresh and unusual but mostly delicious.  The atmosphere was warm and inviting, but old and relaxed.

Going to Trader Joe's: Not once, not twice, but at least three times did I visit TJ's this week.  It is a wonderland of private label snacks, drinks, frozen meals and more all at rock bottom prices.  AE and I stocked up on delicious vegan pad thai and other delicious frozen meals (at around $3 each) to save money during our lunch hour.  Needless to say, I am addicted to TJ's and will make many, many more visits this summer.  And PLEASE watch this great video.  It really captures the magic of TJ's.

Dinner at The Frying Pan: On our first day at MSLO we probably heard people mention The Frying Pan like one hundred times each.  And the veggie burgers you can get there.  So we had to check it out and again, it didn't disappoint. It was packed full as we stepped up to the bar to give our order.  We ended up sharing a veggie burger and a goat cheese salad.  Ten minutes later our numbers were called and we had a predicament.  No tables were to be found.  Minutes later, as we perched on a plant stand, the manager approached and had a table brought down for us.  After that it was great, although the rocking of the boat did make us a little loopy!

I'm sure there is more, but this post is really long already, so I will end it here.  I'm currently on a STAYCATION this weekend, so look forward to that post.

"...and I can see the Statue of Liberty from my desk!"

Well, today was the big day! My first day as a Martha Stewart Intern! My day started at 6am after a few hours of nervous sleep, as I was expected at the office by 8:30.  For my first day, I wore a striped Anthropologie skirt, white button down and leather belt with nude heels.

After my 40 minute commute (2 trains and a bus) I arrived at the Starrett Lehigh Building, met my friend AE, and headed in, ready to start my first day! I checked in with security and had a temporary pass made, then made my way up to the two floors MSLO occupies in the building.  We had our company pictures taken and then were given a delicious breakfast of fruit, yogurt and bagels.  We also got gifts!  Each intern was given the most recent magazines, Living, Whole Living and Everday Food, as well as a Martha coffee mug (to use in the office) and a Martha, wait for it, RAIN SLICKER.  What now.  Our HR coordinator said he wasn't forcing us to ever wear them, but its the thought that counts.

After breakfast we got a tour of the building, which I can't detail, but I will say it is an amazing space and a great creative environment.  We had an orientation meeting about emails, computers, shuttles, timecards and more as well as getting to know you activities.  Then we were ushered up to the rooftop garden for a pizza party with some of the most delicious pizza and salad I've ever had!  About halfway through our meal, our supervisors came to join us! After lunch we found our desks and got straight to work! I am working a lot with the website and the imagery that is found there as well as with the whole photo team! I didn't see Martha today, but I'm told she is in the office at least once a day when she isn't traveling, so hopefully I will soon!

Overall the first day was even better than I hoped it would be! ...and bonus, I can see the Statue of Liberty from my desk! Now I'm back at SVA, watching the sun go down out my window and anxiously awaiting another day at MSLO!

Until next time,

AJ

What's Say What?

Hello world, are you reading?

I'm starting this blog to document my summer experience in New York City.  Reasons for this?

A.  So my parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts, friends, stalkers will know what I'm up to this summer.

B. New York is an incredible wealth of sights, sounds, emotions that I want to document.

C.  I'm a Martha Stewart summer intern. Digital Photography to be precise.

D.  I'm trying out Blogger's format (because I think it might be more functional that my previous two blogs with WordPress).

So anyway.  I thought I'd divide these posts into a few different categories.  But I'll elaborate in my next post, don't want to overwhelm here.

And that's the world according to me.
